Aim of the subject:
The Microbiology and microbial physiology course gives the students a detailed description of different groups of microbes, i.e., viruses, bacteria, protists and fungi. Based on the general Microbiology subject, we discuss the characteristics of representative genera of microbes (like morphology, metabolism, life cycle, significance in environment, industry or medicine). The methods of "negative" microbiology (sterilisation and disinfection) are also involved. Based on the Cell biology subject, we extend the students' knowledge on some special physiological processes, like vesicular transport, function of cytoskeleton, regulation of the eukaryotic cell division cycle, etc.
