The subject gives an overview on the effects of the different parameters influencing the biodegradation processes, and presents engineering aspects and case studies for establishing cost-effective and efficient treatment technologies.
Detailed description of the course:Basic components and description of biodegradation processes:
environmental importance and definitions; influence of substrates and microflora, importance of adaptation; role of electron acceptors (oxygen, nitrate, sulphate, organic compounds);
Applied biodegradation in wastewater collection and treatment systems:
spontaneous and induced biodegradation in sewer and storage systems; induced biodegradation in the activated sludge treatment (cost-effective upgrading of the bioreactor arrangement, optimization of the floc-structure, biological N- and P-removal); application of biofilm and disperse-biofilm systems.
