Aim of the subject:
This course describes microbes (and microbial processes) having hygienic importance. We deal with human (obligate and opportunistic) pathogens, members of the normal microflora, and microbes producing antibiotics, which are used as chemotherapeutic agents in treating bacterial infections. We study the basics of epidemiology, mainly of infectious diseases. Infectious diseases are generally discussed as processes between a pathogen microbe and its host, together with the main factors of both (virulence and resistance). Diagnostic tests, antimicrobial therapy and prevention of epidemics are also involved in this subject.
