Medicinal Chemistry is an important subject for second year MSc students studying for degrees in pharmaceutical engineering or pharmaceutical chemistry. The main goal of the course is to give a basic knowledge of the students for discussions and cooperation with medicinal doctors, pharmacologists and biologists during drug discovery and development. The lectures assume that the students have a knowledge of chemistry at level two of a university natural sciences degree. This course gives explanation of drug actions in different receptors and enzymes, the mechanism of actions of small molecule drugs and biomedicines as well. The most important fields of medication are discussed and the structure – biological activity relations are demonstrated with the examples of the most frequently applied drugs.
In the practical part of the course the most important biological and biochemical aspects of medicinal chemistry are overwiewed together with the basic biotechnological methods for production of protein type drugs using QbD and PAT methods. On the other hand, numerous industrial examples are presented for the development of economic chemical processes used in synthesis of small molecular original and generic products.
